Engineering the Future

Ursuline Bearbotics, Team #6391, is an all-girls robotics team competing in FIRST (For Inspiration of Science and Technology), a leading youth robotics community. Competitions challenge students to work under pressure, strict rules and limited times. In addition to working as a crew to design, build, test, and program a robot, team members report increased confidence, improved communication skills, and leadership development.

“Coopertition” - noun
The combination of competition and cooperation unique to the robotics community. Robotics teams are expected to help one another and show empathy toward teams experiencing challenges.

I haven’t just learned about science and technology. I’ve also learned better ways to communicate, how to work under pressure, and how to balance being both competitive and compassionate.

I never imagined I would be able to build a robot, write and configure software, or become confident using power tools. Through this experience, I’ve developed not only technical skills but also strong leadership and communication abilities. One of the most exciting parts has been learning how to utilize modern tools like Claude to assist with programming, computer vision, and autonomous routines. I’ve had an incredible amount of fun on the team, and it’s inspired me to pursue a STEM-focused path in college.

Robotics was my first introduction to engineering and computer science, and it showed me how to approach problems with determination and creativity. Beyond building technical skills, the program taught me how to apply what I learned to make a meaningful impact in my community. Ultimately, it gave me the confidence to pursue a career path that felt uniquely my own, and I’m incredibly grateful for the experience that helped shape my future.
