English Department
Purpose
The English Department at Ursuline Academy exists to encourage the development of writing skills, analytical ability, research skills, and to broaden perspectives in the context of the Ursuline mission and core values.
Goals
The overall goals of the Ursuline Academy English department include the teaching of writing at all levels and in all discourses from the sentence through the paragraph to the essay. The department endeavors to cultivate in students a broad and deep knowledge of literary works from diverse times and places. Ultimately, the department provides students with the tools to interpret and find meaning in their own writing and in the literary works of others—tools important to them throughout a lifetime of reading and writing.
Objectives
Specific course goals and objectives are achieved through lecture, daily reading and writing, literature circles, internet technology and webquests, use of the laptop and word processing programs to compose and revise essays, powerpoints, quizzes, in-class writings, and essays--both personal and research oriented--on assigned and student selected topics.
